Fernwood Coffee Co. was founded in 2016 in a converted train depot on the edge of a small town. The original building still has its old ticket window, which the founders turned into a walk-up order counter. The company started with a single espresso machine and now roasts its own beans on site.

The bestselling drink at Fernwood is the "Depot Latte," a vanilla-and-cardamom latte named after the old train depot the shop is built in. It outsells every other drink on the menu by a wide margin and has been on the menu since opening day.

Fernwood sources its coffee beans from three small farms, one in Ethiopia, one in Colombia, and one in Guatemala. All three farms are visited in person by a Fernwood buyer once a year to check on growing conditions and pay a fixed price regardless of the market rate that year.

Fernwood has three locations, all in the same state. The original train depot location, a smaller downtown kiosk that opened in 2019, and a drive-through location that opened in 2022. There are no current plans to expand outside the state.

Fernwood's loyalty program gives customers a free drink after every ten purchases. Unlike most loyalty programs, it never expires and can be transferred to another person by giving them the physical punch card.
